Description

Canadian is one of the many engines that works in Big City, Pennsylvania. She is a former Canadian National S-1-b Mikado built in 1917 by Canadian Locomotive Company in Kingston and is named after her original owner the Canadian Government Railway, which later became the Canadian National. Built for mainly freight services, the 2-8-2 Mikado hauled freight from the day she was built all the way up to 1958 when she was retired from service. In 1961, a motel owner named Willis F. Barron bought Canadian and was planning to use her on the Reading's branch line in Ashland, Pennsylvania, but the line was ripped up before the plans could go through. Thanks to the line being ripped up, Willis had disassembled Canadian, moved her via truck and reassembled at his motel to be used as a static display. The female Mikado didn't like it one bit. It was boring, she couldn't move, and most of the time she had to deal wit the outdoor weather. Thankfully for her in 1982, the Gettysburg Railroad purchased her for tourist excursions and she was soon operational where she worked alongside various other engines on the line until 1987. Steamtown traded their Canadian Pacific 1278 for Canadian and she was soon taken to Scranton, where her wonderful career began. Known for hauling mainline excursions at Steamtown, the 2-8-2 was "the star" of the museum, making her feel rather boastful and cocky at times. Working with her friends CP 2317 and Baldwin Locomotive Works 26, Canadian handled numerous excursions for Steamtown National Historic Site until she was sadly taken out of service in 2012 for a rebuild. Other projects had put Canadian to the side and she was worried she'll never be operational again, that is until the Chicago Division bought her and took her to their own shops in Big City. After a 3 month rebuild, Canadian was back to full working order and began hauling mainline freight and commuter trains out of Big City. She can be a bit cocky and full of herself at times, but she'll always be remembered at Steamtown.
